Today I want to share my own experience as why chewing food is extremely important. It is the easiest way to reduce your food intake by 25-30% and loose those extra pounds. Dieting was very difficult option for me, because I feel it is important to satisfy both physical hunger and mental hunger. Due to our hectic schedule and childhood habit of finishing the meal early and on time, we have the tendency of eating food very fast. So when I first came to know about this concept I thought that I should give it a try. Initially I felt irritated but it really worked for me. I have reduced my food intake without sacrificing my mental hunger. However if we eat slowly we can enjoy the taste of food and we will be conscious of what we are eating. So I simply follow the mantra The slower you eat the lesser you eat. Later I read more about this, and realized that there are various health benefits linked to this technique. So without going into more technicalities I want to share the gist of this healthy concept.
How digestive process begins
Off course it is very important to know what you are eating but at the same time it is equally important to know how you are eating. Yes I am talking about mastication. It is the process of chewing in which food is crushed and ground by teeth. It is the first step of digestion, and it allows food to break down from large particles into small particles that is more easy to digest. Saliva contains digestive enzymes, so the longer you chew food the more time these enzymes have to start breaking down your food, making digestion easier for your stomach and small intestine. This also makes it easier for your intestines to absorb nutrients and energy from the food particles. Saliva also contains lingual lipase, a fat metabolising enzyme, which breaks down fat before it reaches the stomach. The longer your food stays in touch with your saliva, the better it gets lubricated and lesser the stress on your esophagus.
Many research has shown relationship between chewing and weight control. The studies confirmed chewing every morsel 30-40 times helps you lose weight because it allows your brain more time to receive signals from the stomach that it's full. Normally it takes up to 20 minutes for your brain to get the signal that your stomach is full. During that 20-minute period, it is easy to consume portions you don’t need.
Benefits of Chewing
- Chewing helps you eat less and decreases your calorie consumption
- It helps you to eat knowingly and consciously. When you eat fast it is the tendency of eating more and unwanted food as well.
- Food digested adequately helps you to absorb more nutrients from your meal.
- With this chewing habit you can experience the exact taste and delicacy of the food.
- If you want to maintain your weight or lose extra pounds then this scientific proven technique would really help you.
Side effects of improper chewing
Incomplete chewing, speed eating, promotes intestinal bacteria, causing flatulence, bloating, constipation, stomach ache, cramps and even diarrhea. The more you chew your food the more nutrients you absorb from the food. Also when you are only gulping you are deprived of delicious taste of food.
